Engineering Departments
You will spend the duration of your Engineering Year in Industry programme based in one of our Engineering departments. Although we cannot guarantee your placement will be in a specific department, if you have a particular preference for an area, you will be able to state this on your application form. Some of the potential Placement departments are detailed below,
- Environmental Test
- As part of company design verification process, testing a diverse spectrum of seat components and non-ejection products. Evaluating captured test data through reduction analysis, interpretation of instrumentation data and high-speed video records to create reports for customers.
- Manufacturing Engineering
- Determining the manufacturing methodology, supporting the Martin-Baker manufacturing process within a small batch environment. Analysing production time and material variances and investigating defects with a focus on continuous improvement of processes to benefit time, cost, or quality.
- Mechanical Design
- Ensuring that the customer legal and internal requirements are embodied in the product design, analysed and verified to ensure compliance. Project related engineering tasks including technical requirement analysis and generation of CAD models and engineering drawings that accurately represent the concept.
- Product Safety
- Conducting detailed investigation of any potential safety related issues for any of the Martin-Baker product line. Problem solving to prevent issues impacting the manufacturing and production of the business.
- Programmes
- Working to coordinate projects, help develop programmes, and provide support to internal and external stakeholders, for ejection and crashworthy seats. A programme manager will provide technical guidance and oversight to all disciplines within the company, ensuring that all design, test, and manufacturing operations proceed smoothly. Programmes are also responsible for balancing schedule, quality and cost to deliver projects and products to the customer.
- Reliability, Maintainability & Safety
- Provide reliability, safety, and maintenance guidance during development and sustainment of the Martin-Baker product range. Project related engineering tasks including reliability analyses such as Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis and Reliability Block Diagrams, system safety analyses such as Hazard Analyses and Fault Tree Analysis, as well as hand-on assessments and report writing for technical documentation.
- Quality
- Working to improve the manufacturing process of our ejection seats and develop robust solutions to manufacturing problems. Investigate customer concerns using methods including root cause analysis, corrective and preventative measures.
- Seat Test
- Verify ejection seat performance requirements through testing of the full seat or parts. Preparing ejection seat test plans, risk assessments and readiness reviews leading onto evaluation of post-test data using reduction analysis and photographic data.
- Stress
- Determining the stresses and strains of materials and structures when subjected to the extreme forces during the expected product use. Playing a vital role in the mechanical engineering of the products, establishing the expected life of the seat systems based on fatigue analysis.
- Supplier Quality
- The SQA team is responsible for ensuring that the product is delivered on time and in full to stringent specifications. Creating supplier improvement plans, assessing and approving of suppliers through audit, and generating corrective action reports. Using methods including root causes analysis and software including SAP.
- Systems
- Creating simulations of ejection seat tests and running in depth analytics on this for the likelihood of these. Project related engineering tasks including technical requirement analysis, feasibility and trade studies, and test matching.
